Here You are two answers : http://www.bociany.edu.pl...p?p=63023#63023

Monika says:

"I am not a professional, but it seems to me that this is not possible."

Arcadio says:

"I’ve never heard of anything like the test of the stork’s “voice”, storks do not have vocal cords, clacking, which we hear is hitting two parts of their bill".

Have a warm and sunny weekend too, Gersenda

Hi Frank! Arcadio would like to ask you whether you know anything about such comparative analysis, are they made somewhere ?

Hi Gersenda, tell Arcadio that I don't really know anything about this. I just posted this for a member on the Polish-Genius mailing list...

"""We know that each stork has a different sound so they are identified by other storks. Perhaps a "linguist" can listen to Czantorka from last year's films and compare them to the females' clacking this year in order to determine _who_ is in the nest with Beskidek."""

Her question was interesting and something I had never thought of. I'm not even sure if storks/birds have different sounds.

Besides monitoring your site I also check in on bald eagles and the black storks in Estonia. I might pose this question to them. I know that in Estonia they do a lot of research on the black storks and have GPS tracking devices on a lot of the storks, with world maps to follow them. There are no birds at this nest right now but they seem to have a way of identifying them when they arrive, even without a GPS device attached to them or no band attached.

It might take a while but I'll try to find out some information on this subject from the naturalists at the black stork site.

Cheers, Frank

Hi, Frank !
We are discussing this problem :
http://www.bociany.edu.pl...opic.php?t=2158

Now we know , that there is a scientist in Poland , who deals with the voices of birds. I will let You know, if we learn something more. Of course, storks have different "voices", to recognize each other and know who is an intruder. And perhaps it can be tested, just like human voices.
I think, Estonia is the small country and Urmas knows all his birds .

Hi Gersenda, it's great to see two eggs in the nest already.

I posted the question of identifying storks on the black stork forum and received this reply from Urmas.

"Most probably there is possibility to identify individuals of BS by voice they produce. But as this species has not very much developed vocalisation, they communicate rather by visual signs - the separating of voices could be technically difficult. If somebody has absolute hearing (I'm situated far form that ability) and could separate different storks, then it works. BAsically there are some programs for computers to analyse and determine individual birds by their voice (like Cranes), but I never heard these used for BS...."

So, unless we come up with something positive we'll drop the subject for the time being and just enjoy watching the nest.

Oh yeah, one last question.... since I don't read Polish, what to I click on to log out of the forum. Usually I just close this page on the browser....

Best regards, Frank

Hi, Frank !

Thank You for your interest in this issue and send us Urmas answer. I have translated it for our users . Urmas may not have absolute hearing, but he recognizes all the birds very well. Maybe this topic will be further developed, it is very interesting .
We have still two eggs and waiting for more. One of this couple brings some awful garbage to the nest. Last year, the suspected was Beskidek, but now I do not know who brings this..
There was a stork in the nest in Estonia yesterday . I hope he will come back with his mate .

To log off the forum, click the area marked in red on the top of the page. I have marked in green word that you need to click to send, or read out PM . I have just send You a message, so You can try ! :-D

Thanks Gersenda, it seemed to work, I read your message and did a reply but don't know where it went.
Maybe you can ask for a weekly garbage pickup at the nest :-)
Regards, Frank

I think, that garbage pickup will not help. Our storks treat waste, as furniture. Now do not mind, but when will be storklets ...

I received your PM, so it works.
